good rule of thumb (and most code books) state that the maximum overhang should be no more than one-third the total length of the joist. this provides two-thirds of the joist as support.
the distance your joists can safely cantilever or overhang a drop beam is determined by the size of the joists, the wood type and grade of the lumber and the spacing between joists. many building departments limit joist cantilevers to 24" maximum. you must use at least five framing nails to attach the rim joist to the ends of your joists.

there's a sniper on the roof of the building across the courtyard to the left that will shoot at you when you get close to the balcony. take him down with a shot from your own rifle and grab the armor on the table to the left of the balcony doorway if you need to. go out onto the balcony and hop over the railing onto the overhang.
exit out the big doorway and clear the deck of the ship, including the guy that's on top of the room you just came out of, of guards. circle around behind it and do a running jump onto the overhang and then up onto the balcony. lastly remember to name your server and keep the max number of players to a limit that is good for what kind

a southern pine (2) 2x12 beam can span 8 feet when supporting joists spanning a maximum of 14 feet, and it can cantilever 2 feet beyond the posts on each side. with the allowable cantilever of the joists, this beam would support a deck 12 feet by 17 1/2 feet.
the overhang will be past the 4x4 posts supporting the original deck. it will be made of 2x8 joists that are 3 feet long and will be atached with joist hangers to the deck and to the new end which is also 2x8. will this be strong enough for the 3 overhang or is it possible to go further like 5' like joel said
once you have taken the enemy out there will be one left at the top of the stairs under the building overhang so go up carefully and kill him. but it will only have a maximum of 12 rounds of ammo at any time, so it is not the be-all and end-all weapon i am afraid. rb-a jump to the deck here and exit; go through the window ahead and
