i've been reading through some of the posts here and have picked up a few tips but still require further help. i am planning to build a deck over the concrete slab in our alfresco area. the concrete is only 5 years old and i reasonably level. i am looking to use jarrah boards but wanted to get some clarity and advice in a few other areas
nexgens diy composite battens are also a strong choice for diy decking over concrete. made from the same composition as our decking boards, these battens are designed for use on paving or concrete pads, or joists on pedestal deck installations.

your typical two-by-four, for instance, is only an inch-and-a-half wide in the shorter direction. with their widest faces towards the slab these boards will be at about the right height to build a deck over the slab. if clearances are smaller, then it becomes more difficult to build a deck over concrete.
if you are fixing the battens through the packers into the slab, try using galvanized countersunk masonry bolts, or concrete wall plugs, screwed in at 600mm intervals. fix the decking to the battens with a 4mm gap between the boards and then finish off the ends with decking boards down the sides. this further complements the look of the deck.

5mm spacing, wanted 5mm minimum which worked out good as the board widths over the width of the deck worked out full boards the whole way across. painted the subframe black to avoid the 'see through' effect. 70x35 subframe secured to concrete using screws and plugs. 140mm merbau decking with 5mm spacing.
